Activated Carbon Filters

Activated carbon filters are a critical component in biogas purification systems, primarily used to remove trace contaminants such as hydrogen sulfide (H₂S), siloxanes, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from the raw biogas stream. These filters operate through a process known as adsorption, where impurities are physically captured on the porous surface of the activated carbon media.

The high surface area and microporous structure of activated carbon make it exceptionally effective at trapping gas-phase pollutants, thereby protecting downstream equipment such as gas engines, turbines, and upgrading units from corrosion and performance degradation. Regular monitoring and periodic replacement or regeneration of the carbon media are essential to maintain optimal purification efficiency.


Absorption Units

Absorption units are employed in biogas upgrading systems to selectively remove undesirable gas components—most commonly carbon dioxide (CO₂) and hydrogen sulfide (H₂S)—from the biogas stream. These units typically utilize liquid solvents (such as water, amines, or proprietary chemical solutions) that chemically or physically absorb target gases under controlled conditions of temperature and pressure.

In water scrubbing systems, CO₂ and H₂S are physically absorbed into water under high pressure, while in chemical absorption systems (e.g., using amine solutions), the target gases react chemically with the solvent. Absorption units are known for their high removal efficiency and are particularly suitable for applications requiring biomethane production at pipeline quality. Efficient heat integration, solvent regeneration, and emissions control are key factors in the design and operation of these units.
